Research Collaborations

At The Moko Foundation, we develop partnerships with researchers in order to engage the community in relevant research projects.

Anti viral development - Aotearoa

We are working with researchers at Waipapa Taumata Rau to find specific medicines to treat infections with viruses like RSV to help keep our whānau out of hospital. RSV is a virus and the main cause of our tamariki having to go to hospital and ICU. Right now we have no specific vaccines or medicines funded in Aotearoa to fight RSV. Their work uses a type of medicine previously developed to fight cancer, as they have found it can also stop different types of viruses from spreading. Our collaboration aims to keep our community up to date and have input into this type of science that has the potential to find safe antiviral medicines to keep our whānau well and out of hospitals.

What is an anti viral?

Antiviral medications help your body fight off harmful viruses. These drugs can ease symptoms and shorten the length of a viral infection. Antivirals also lower the risk of getting or spreading viruses that cause herpes and HIV. Several approved antivirals treat the coronavirus that causes COVID-19.

Una Ren

Our partnership with Una Ren is focused around her research with carriage among the community. Our initial mahi with Una began around kaupapa Māori & research & how to ensure it was reflected correctly in the study design.

Una is part of a team from ESR (environmental science & research) & her study around carriage of infectious diseases is funded by Te Niwha. Una aims to get a better understanding of carriage of infectious diseases such as Pneumonia & Meningitis among Māori & Pacific communities. Her study will carry out surveillance of spread of disease in Māori & Pacific households in South Auckland & Northland.  This research will hopefully provide more insight in to how these diseases are spread & therefore inform or update health policies & immunisations schedules for those most at risk.
